FAQ

How do I prepare for a shoot?

Don't worry, this is not a test and you will not be graded! Portrait sessions are laid back and judgement free experiences.

Present yourself however you are most comfortable! You can choose casual wear, competition attire or something more extravagant like a ball gown. Anything goes!

As for the horse, a bath prior to the shoot is desirable, but make sure the horse is dry when I arrive!

It is your choice whether you would like to keep manes and tails natural or plait. If natural, a brush through is all you need.

Immediately before the shoot time, give the face a wipe over with a damp cloth or sponge, paying close attention to the nostrils. For close up equine portraits, clear makeup or baby oil helps to accentuate features. You may choose to keep hooves natural, or use a hoof black/clear shine, however it is best to avoid hoof oils as they attract dirt.

Mel is able to remove cuts and scars in post production, should you request this.

What location?

Your home location or a location your horse is familiar with is ideal, a relaxed horse is best for these sessions. If you are travelling to a new location for a shoot, allow some extra time for your horse to settle in and have a walk around the location.

If you are concerned your home location or agistment may not be the best background, get in touch with Mel to discuss - often we can make the smallest or most unassuming areas work.

What time of day is best?

For outdoor portraits I recommend early morning or late afternoon timing. This provides the most flattering light, shooting in midday sun can be harsh and bright - no one likes squinty photos! Specific timing is dependant upon time of year, get in contact with Mel to discuss.

What to expect on the day?

Have your horse ready at your booked time slot, this ensures we have as much time as possible to get the best images we can.

Within 10 business days of the shoot you will receive your gallery to make final selections from.

Will you post images from our session on social media?

Client portrait images are not posted on Equisoul social media without prior consent from the client.

Can I post the images to social media?

Go for it! I'd love for you to share images with your family and friends.

I posted on social media & a brand has approached me to enquire about image usage, what do I do?

Although this is understandably exciting, portrait images are released for personal use by the client only. Brands and companies interested in using an image will be required to purchase an image license (usage with the permission of the client, these are private portrait images after all!).

Help, my horse is a fire breathing dragon today, how embarrassing!

Whatever the situation, i've most likely seen it or been in your shoes so no big deal here.
If you know your horse is a nervous or hot type, a ride/lunge/groundwork before the session may be helpful.

An advantage of still imagery is exactly that, it's one moment in time and often fidgety and nervous horses photograph just fine, you'd never know they weren't angels on the day!

Various poses can be used to keep the feet moving where needed.

When is payment due?

The booking fee of $100 is due prior to your photoshoot to secure your booking. the balance can be paid either the day of the shoot or following the shoot. Images are not released until payment has been made in full.
Payment options: I accept cash, bank transfer, card payment via invoice.
